Hi,

I would like to know what the prerequisite of OCPJP generally is? Is the prerequisite of OCPJP X only OCAJP X or can it also be OCAJP (X-1)?

I have recently passed my OCAJP 8 exam. I may take the OCPJP exam in a few months from now or maybe a year. If OCPJP 9 is out by then, I would like to take that. Would I then have to appear for OCPJP 8 first and then take the upgrade exam for OCPJP 9 to get the certificate for OCPJP 9? Or can I directly appear for OCPJP 9 and get its certificate? The former doesn't make any sense to me. It is just a waste to pay for an extra exam and may actually cause some people to just make peace with not getting certified. The latter makes a lot of sense. After all, the delta of (OCPJP 9 - OCAJP 8) and (OCPJP 9 - OCAJP 9) should be quite small.

Hello Adeel,

Is the prerequisite of OCPJP X only OCAJP X or can it also be OCAJP (X-1)?

Both are possible ways:
OCA 6/7 -> OCP 6/7 -> OCP 8
OCA 8 -> OCP 8

Would I then have to appear for OCPJP 8 first and then take the upgrade exam for OCPJP 9 to get the certificate for OCPJP 9?

I think, it will be the same procedure as above.

So because you already have OCA 8 it is the right way to get OCP 8 if you need an OCP certificate, so you can upgrade to 9 when it comes out.

Maybe my question was not clear enough. I will cut it short. Since I have OCAJP 8 now, can I get OCPJP 9 certified by directly attempting the OCPJP 9 exam?

By the, I know that OCPJP 9 is not available yet. I am talking about the future.

Can't speak for Oracle, but no, I don't think so.
The reason is: it is not possible to get directly the OCPJP 8, having the OCAJP 7 - why should it be possible for 8 and 9 respectively?

That's the answer I was looking for. What I meant to ask was if OCPJP 8 be attained directly after OCAJP 7, as per the current rules.

Oracle will probably have the same rules for reaching OCPJP 9 from OCAJP 8. As I said in my first post, this really doesn't make sense to me. It is just wasteful and redundant. If I prepare for OCPJP 9, I will be tested for all knowledge anyway. I don't see the point of doing OCPJP 8 first, and then doing the upgrade exam.

Anyway, thanks for clarifying the current rules.

The OCPJP 9 is unlikely to be out by then anyway. Java 9 itself doesn't come out until September. Then Oracle has to update the OCA and then the OCP. That takes a good while.

No, you can not combine different version certifications!
