Hi,

I'm new here. After serving in the army I went to work as a technician for at&t. A couple of years later when I no longer learn something after a day's work of installing or repairing network issues I've grown bored. As a teenager I had a dream to be a programmer and made games on my TI 83+ during math class, went through a couple of teach yourself c++ books and even took a few lower level college courses programming as well. Ten years later I hope to self teach enough to enable a career change into what I always wanted to do! I've began with a book and a handful of online video tutorials for java, one of which said to come to this site and become active... One part of my journey that I begin today!

I look forward to browsing the copius amount of knowledge backlogged on this forum and interacting with some of you as I advance my studies.

Cheers!

~ Jake

Welcome to the Ranch

Whichever book said to come here (was it Head First Java?) was right: we are brilliant.

Absolutely! Head First Java seemed like an ideal starting place for me based on the reviews. When I came here and instantly lost an hour searching questions I had that had already been answered on the forums too!

A good choice for a first book I hope you didn't pay full price for it.

I paid full price for the Kindle version on Amazon... Something like $20 I think? Are there secrets around here for getting books on the cheap?

$20 isn't too bad, but you can get a paper version secondhand for the same sort of price.

You can thank my dental hygienist for my untimely aliveness. So tiny:
