What have you done on this so far.  What kind application is going to be?  Is it web based application, then you need to implement it using web technologies like servlet/jsp etc, and if it is desktop based app you need to implement it using java socket programming.

If you are using sockets you will need the IP addresses of the other computers on the LAN to be able to connect to them.

It also depends a lot on whether this is a point-to-point system (meaning there are exactly 2 clients which talk to each other directly), or whether multiple clients are involved (in which case a central server will likely be involved).
