Is there a unique sessionId for each instance of a particular web application running on an application server?

You'd need to consult the Servlet Specification for such details. But frankly that's not anything I've needed to be concerned about in over a decade and half of working with servlets. Makes me wonder why you need to know this?

Again after your response I see your point. In the past I would generate a pseudo session ID a store that in a remote file. Then I would use this to know how many sessions were open.

I am now trying to use a Listener to get the count. So I suppose there is no need to have access to the sessionID.

It is sorta covered in the JavaRanch Style Guide.
