Hello Jeanne Boyarsky & Scott Selikoff!
Congratulations for releasing a new book.
I'm already SCJP 6 certified and working on getting OCP 8.
From your experience, what is the certification topic that is under estimate by most of the students?
Kind regards,
Torsten

Torsten,
Different people have different hardest topics. I like lambdas and functional programming so I don't find that hard, but many people do. Topics you don't use like Concurrency or JDBC might be up there as well.

JDBC was actually tricky because they include topics nobody uses in real life on the exam (including a couple anti-patterns)

Streams are fun (+awesome/useful) but the sheer breadth of material required for the exam can be daunting.  For example, while most of you are familiar with commons interfaces such as Supplier or BiPredicate, others like ToDoubleBiFunction and LongToDoubleFunction tend not to be as memorable.  The method details can also be hard to remember, like flatMapToDouble() and some of the more complex collect() methods.  Unfortunately, the exam covers a lot of stream classes and methods, but luckily many can be understood by remembering common rules, rather than memorizing every single permutation.

For JDBC, I completely agree with Jeanne.  While Jeanne and I both have moderated the JDBC forum, and consider ourselves to be skilled in using JDBC, we were blown away some of the stuff we saw on the exam.  They test a lot of JDBC topics you never use... while failing to test things all JDBC developers use..  It's pretty tough.

I worked myself through the JDBC Chapter of your Certification Guide book and was blown away by the sheer amount of API you covered in there.
So I'm lucky that JDBC is not coverd in the upgrade exam.
Upgrade to Java SE 8 OCP - Review Exam Topics

I don't mind so much they covered so many APIs. I resent *which* APIs they choose. For example, people shouldn't be creating a raw connection by passing the password in.
