Hi Paul,

It is focused on the essentials that someone new to software development on Linux should know.  Check out the Table of Contents and let me know if you have any questions regarding these topics: https://www.amazon.com/Linux-Developers-Jumpstart-Programming-Library/dp/0134657284/ref=asap_bc?ie=UTF8 + click "Look inside".

Thank you,
-Bo

Hi Bo,

The book does look pretty useful.
Particularly the Python and Perl scripting.

What sort of tasks are Python and Perl better for than Bash?
I don't currently use either.

thanks,
Paul

Hey Paul,

One advantage of Python and Perl is they have vast libraries (called modules) which you can call upon to enhance your code.  Also, both have Object Oriented capabilities (more so Python which is mostly OO by nature).  Plus, Python and Perl scripts are a bit more portable between different Operating Systems.

I cover some more advantages between the languages in my book.  I actually enjoy using all of them for different scenarios.

Hi Bo,
I develop Java JEE based based websites .
I use Linux shell scripts for building and deploying but don't see where tools like Python or Perl would fit in.
Fro example, our current Web Site process has a script that downloads the code from git ,compiles it, and then deploys it to a Tomcat server.

thanks.
Paul
What do you have in that there bucket? It wouldn't be a tiny ad by any chance ...
