Hi,

Congrats for your new book,

I have a question:

- If someone has the book K&B7 , can he rely on it (first part of the book OCA Java 7) for the exam OCA Java 8 ?
- In the case of the exam OCP Java 8 , is it sufficient to rely on one exam study guide book and after that mock exam such as Enthuware ? or you prefer reading more than one exam study guide book ?

The OCA 7 part of  K&B 7 covers "most" of the objectives of the OCA 8 exam, but Oracle added a few new things like simple lambdas, ArrayList and some of the new Date / Time API. You might still pass with the OCA 7 book, but it doesn't cover those topics. You can go to Oracle's website and compare the objectives between the OCA 7 and the OCA 8.

As for using other resources, it seems like a lot of candidates do use other resources, I'll kick that question out the the JavaRanchers

There are some important differences within same topics as well. For example, a question on interfaces containing static methods may have different answers in SE 7 and SE 8. So my suggestion would be to save yourself  time and use the right edition of the book for the exam that you wish to take.

I would strongly advice against using a study guide of a prior version of the certification exam, because there are some (important) difference between Java 7 and 8. Probably the most important one is the default and static methods in interfaces. So a code snippet might produce a compiler error in Java 7, but compiles successfully in Java 8.

That's very hard to tell. Some ranchers use just one study guide (and some mock exams software); other ranchers use more than one study guide (and some mock exams software) during their preparation.

In the OcajpFaq (besides other very useful information) and this thread you'll find an overview of all available (free and commercial) resources (study guides, mock exams, video courses,...) to thorougly prepare yourself for the certification exam. And on the OcajpWallOfFame (and the OcpjpWallOfFame) you'll find plenty of (links to) experiences from other ranchers (including resources they have used). So it can be useful to determine which resources are useful (and which are not).

If you use the search function, you'll find plenty of topics with advice to prepare (and ace) the OCA exam. Here are a few:
  • Studying so hard just to fail(1z0-808)
  • Failing Java SE 8 Programmer I
  • Bad Experience with OCA 7 exams
  • Any tricks about how to manage the 120 min for so many question?
  • second failed OCAJP
  • Need some advice after failing the exam

  • Hope it helps!
    Kind regards,
    Roel

Yes Roel, i will follow your advice and use OCA Java 8 study guide to save the time and also to ignore any confusion of the differences between Java 7 and Java 8

I will try with one study guide along with Enthuware mock exam and see what score of first mock exam will tell me.

Thanks again Roel for your valuable information.
