Hi,
I am a Sun Certified Java Programmer (don't exactly remember which version, maybe 1.2 or 1.3 !).

I would like to upgrade to OCP JP 8. I did program using java during the last years but never over release 6 and certainly not using all new features.

If I undestood well on Oracle certfication path,

Since I am Sun Certified Java Programmer, I could skip doing OCA JP 8 and go directly to: the following exam:

Upgrade to Java SE 8 OCP ( Java SE 6 and all prior versions) 1Z0-813

Is that right ?
Right now, I am doint mock exams about OCA JP 8 to refresh my java language knowledge and learn exactly what was added during all these years.

I will eventually do some mocks exams for this upgrade exam and study more carefully the APIs related to this exam.

Any suggestions ? Would it be better to quickly get OCA JP 8 and then spend more time to do OCP JP 8 ? Is is better and easier to go directly to the Upgrade exam ?

Thanks!

Jean-Pierre,
Welcome to CodeRanch!

It is less expensive to take the upgrade exam because you only have to pay for one exam. It is easier to take the OCA 8 and then the OCP 8. The upgrade exam is a lot harder.

If you do choose the upgrade exam, make sure your study guide covers the upgrade exam.

Thanks Jeanne,

I will follow your advise and finally go throuh the whole process again with the 2 certifications instead of just the upgrade. I will probably be able to get the first one quickly too!

Hi again,

It might sound as a strange additional question but it would really matter right now.

I saw a job offer asking for at least Oracle Certified Programmer for Java SE6.

Was my "Sun Certified Programmer for Java 2" renamed  to Oracle Certified Programmer for Java SE6 or is it just down the drain as an Oracle equivalent certification ? I am asking this questions since the Oracle certification upgrade path would qualify me to skip OCAJ Java SE8 certification exam and directly go for an "Upgrade for Oracle Certified Programmer for Java SE8" exam... because of a Sun certification for Java programmer SE6 and older versions.

Thanks again,
Jean-Pierre

Yes. The Sun Certified Programmer X is equivalent to the Oracle Certified Programmer X for the same version.

It's just naming. It's reasonable for Oracle to want their name in the cert when they acquired Sun!

Hi again Jeanne!

Looking like all SUN Certified Java Programmer, (version from 1 to 6) were ALL renamed to OCJP 6...

The attached extract is from your own book!!!
