I've been learning Android.

I initially created a couple android projects using the Eclipse plug in.

Now it seems Google is trying for Android studio as the only platform for developing android apps.

The problem is the Android Studio platform is awful and is a huge step backwards from the Eclipse plug in.
You spend more time configuring/fighting with the IDE than actually developing an app.
Plus it is a lot slower than the eclipse plug in in terms of builds and deploying an app.
For me , this IDE has take all the fun out of programming.

Because Google has removed support for the Eclipse plug in I'm wondering what this means  for integration with their services like Google Play .

What are the alternatives to Android Studio ? Will the Eclipse plug in continue to work for newer releases of the SDK? It just seems like development has take a huge step backwards.

It is sorta covered in the JavaRanch Style Guide.
