Hi all!

One week ago I passed the OCA exam. I obtained a 90%.

I used Boyarsky and Selikoff book and Enthuware mock exams. I had no previous experience (I'm a philosophy phd student).

I enjoyed B and S's book very very much. I also found Enthuware mock exams truly useful. I would, without hesitation, recommend both to anyone.

The exam was, in general, easier than the mock exams. I did, though, found some really tricky questions. One, for example, had an array converted into a List (fixed size, I know) plus a removeIf(...) in that List: in the end, the compilation problem was due to a method trying to access a lambda variable outside de lambda scope. Evil. I also found a tic tac toe kind of question (a methodology I have never seen in any mock exam or book). In the end, that question wasn't hard, but the format was surprising.

A not so small detail: the pearsonVue system crashed two times while I was doing the exam. Imagine my anxiety . The first time, I was in the question 8 or 9 when an error screen appears (out of nowhere). I had to call the monitor who was, after a couple of minutes, able restart the whole thing. The second crash occurred during the 16th or 17th question. At that time the person in charge was not capable of restarting the exam. While he talked with pearsonVue, I went to find something to eat. Finally I returned and was allowed to complete my exam.

In the end, a 2,5 hour exam took me about 5 hours. It was a very stressful experience. In any case, it is now over and I obtained the certification.

My Enthuware  score was:
Test 1: 60%
Test 2: 75%
Test 3: 81%
Test 4: 81%
Test 5: 73%
Test 6: 87%
LastDay: 81%

I would like to thank Vasyl Lyashkevych, João Victor Gomes, Roel De Nijs and Jeanne Boyarsky for their answers in the many questions I posted here. Thanks!

The next step is the OCP. Any advise? Is it too much harder than de OCA exam?

Another advise: I found one or two questions with absurdly-long code. In that cases, I just simply skipped the code, focused on the options and ruled out the “a-grammatical” answers. I ended up with the right answers without having to analyse the code.

Congratulations, Tomas! Glad to know that our s/w was helpful in your preparation
Thank you for sharing your experience about the long code. It will certainly be helpful for other candidates.

Could you please tell a little bit more about tic tac toe format that you mentioned?

Paul.

Congrats Tomas!  I'm glad you were able to spot trickery!

Like Paul, I'm curious about the tic tac toe format. Would you mind creating a new thread in the OCA forum to give a brief overview of that format? (It is important so I'd rather it not be buried in a success thread).
