Is the use of the application server mandatory to use the Annotation @Autowired?

No, you do not need an application server for @Autowired to work. You do need to properly initialize a Spring application context, however.

When we want our application to communicate with browser we want Application Server.

1. If we want to receive a URL Request from browser and dispatch it to a Front End Controller we want Application Server.

2. If we want our Spring enabled application wants to response back we need Server.

It is sorta covered in the JavaRanch Style Guide.
