This seems a lot more complicated than I would have thought it should be?  I've read they are stored in an xml file in data/data/app... something or other.  Is there not a simple way to get this xml file to SD card or Downloads folder and back in again later?

You can get the file via adb; see https://stackoverflow.com/questions/1243079/how-to-examine-sharedpreferences-from-adb-shell for details.

https://github.com/Ansh1234/AppDataReader allows you to view them on the device.
