I was just attempting to login in response to an article about "Appropriate Technology". I misentered my password once (I think), and was dropped into another site called "Permies". Once there, I entered the correct username and password (later verified on coderanch). But, the password was rejected multiple times.
This made me somewhat uneasy. I have since changed my coderanch password. I have looked up "Permies", and perhaps it is just a special offshoot of coderanch of which I had been unaware. However this behavior looked a bit like a phishing site, as it had a login form, and the page looks a lot like coderanch.
Sorry if this is undue panic.
Permies is a website about permaculture that our trailboss started a long time ago. They're closely related to CodeRanch first of all because it's also Paul's, and secondly because they use the same software.
I understand the panic as it could appear like a phishing site, but it's a legitimate sister site that you don't have to worry about (and may even want to join!)
permies.com/forums is another site of forums, which belongs to Paul Wheaton too. It is about permaculture, you can read its home page to get a better idea.
You password have been rejected because you don't have an account there I presume, which most likely you don't.
Yes, both forums (coderanch and permies) have similarities, because both of them running on JForum software, hence both login screens look similar.
You don't have nothing to worry. In case you want to get a login at permies forums - just follow the standard process you did when you signed up on CodeRanch.
Hope that clarifies your concerns.
Perhaps there is no bug in the site, per se. However, I got into the site by following a link in an email from Coderanch.
Paul Wheaton, our trailboss, recently hosted a two-week Appropriate Technology Course. If you ever wondered what it was all about, a PDF of the teacher's notes is available covering everything from grey water to keeping your beer cold without a fridge! https://permies.com/t/66381/digital-market/digital-market/Technology-Teacher-Notes-Tim-Barker
Had I looked closely at the link, I would have realized it was not for a site where I had a username. So, that is IMHO the fullest information I can provide. I will leave it up to you, whether this is a bug in a mailing list, the wording should be more explicit, or just me (this OP) who should be more aware of surroundings.
Thanks for looking into it--and for the cows.
While there are differences like the logo and navigation, it isn't on the part of the screen where you are typing the username. I made this more obvious in the software for the next release:
