Accessing Firebase Database from Service

So I want to monitor the users location from a Service.  I have this in my Manifest -

Called by this in my MapsActivity

And this is the actual service -


When I send a new location (or move if on my phone) it crashes as thisDB is null.  So, how do I link up to the Firebase Database from the service?

So I found I can't access data from the app in the  service, but the service can use a BroadcastReceiver and send the location as extra info on the intent, that is caught by the main app and processed as usual.  Seems to work great
