I read in the morning paper that MS Paint was going away after 32 years. (another source). Then tonight I read that it will still be in app store. It might as well be gone as a corporate user where we can't install stuff. But I haven't used Paint at work in years.

So I don't think I will miss it. Anyone else?

it was mentioned on one of my NPR podcasts yesterday...maybe the daily Marketplace Tech podcast?  Anyway, they said there is a small but devoted group of artists who still use it in their commercial work who are petetioning to get the code released under and open-source license.

Call me old-fashioned, but I still do things like Print Screen windows, paste into MS Paint, edit (e.g. trim or crop the "fat" around any unwanted parts captured in print screen) and share, or send, to others. Yes, there are some excellent screen shot tools out there that one could argue do a better job (like Snag-It), I know. But I am content to continue using MS Paint. I will be curious to see what Microsoft's new 3D Paint will be like, from a user friendliness point of view. I can understand why Microsoft got some flack over this decision...

Ah, but in my defence I didn't say MS Paint was better than any other similar tool (in fact, I did mention Snag-It!). It's just that I am so used to using it.

But far be it from me to hurt the feelings of a fellow rancher.

I will try your program Randall!

MS announced that it's not entirely going away - it will be availble in the Microsoft store (or something like that), at least according to the NPR Marketplace Tech podcast.

I had heard the same thing Fred. Apparently there are few diehard users out there that do not want to part with it just yet...

Well, hurray! I have always found Paint to be a disaster to use. Last year, I needed two icons representing an unpressed and a pressed JToggleButton, each of the same size, the difference being of course the edges (giving a 3D impression) and the pressed version had a red  square in the middle. Well, I ended up coding it in Java.

@Randall:
is that still the version that we talked about some four years ago, about that JPEGS giving some strange color effects when saved? I'm still looking for a decent paint program (without nasty virusses), haven't had time (and energy) to make one myself sofar.

I see nothing to suggest that anyone is comparing the programs, and there is no mention of one being better than the other. So please remember: Be Nice is the first rule of the house.

I tried your program just now. May I suggest the following to begin with?

1. Incorporate fuctionality for Esc, Ctrl Z, Ctrl A
2. Have a toolbar for line thickness and color. If toolbar also provides options for arrowheads, that would be really awesome.
3. Save As should specify what types does it support

BTW, have you open sourced it already?

If you're thinking of SnagIt, Jing is free and by the same company.

For windows users: windows 10 has native Snipping Tool (this is how it is named), so you don't need to download extra tools. You just need to open and use it. Of course on other systems you don't need to even open, just use it cmd + shift + 4.

Nice!  This has the advantage of not being a system tray app.  Disadvantage is doesn't do "video" capture, can't add boxes, arrows, text.

I use SnagIt at home (Mac) and Snippings (Windows) at work. I like SnagIt better, but both are useable.

Paul, thank you for the feedback. since i wrote it, it must be perfect, right?
Paul, no, it is horrible. it is not only not open source, but i lost the source code. all there is now is the executable jar
