Given that everything required to pass OCP is covered including in the OCA 808, if I fail the OCA test would it be better to study for OCP 809?
In theory this makes sense in theory and I know that you can not take the OCP test until you pass the OCA test. If you know enough to take the OCP exam then you should know more then enough for the OCA exam.
Is there anything on the OCA exam that contradicts the OCP exam or vice versa?

Pete,
No. While the OCP assumes you know everything on the OCA, it is far harder. And OCP materials don't reteach everything. So you wind up studying harder material and not getting the focus on the OCA material.

While the OCP doesn't contradict, it does cover more. So you forget about the simplified view of the world for the OCA.

There used to be indeed just one exam for the OCP. (It still exists for Java 6.) So your logic isn't incorrect. But studying for OCP will require you to study all the topics included in OCA anyway. So I don't see the point. You are not going to save any time in your preparation.

BTW, you can take the OCP exam without passing the OCA exam but they won't give you a certificate until you pass the OCA as well. If you are satisfied with just your OCP scorecard, you can certainly go for OCP directly and not worry about OCA at all.
