Paul, is that a question or something else?

I'm not too sure what to make of you initial statement.

With Windows (and Unix too), files are organized in a hierarchical fashion. When you run the "dir" command, it will list out you current working directory. And you will see a list of files (and subdirectories) in that directory.  With the "cd" command, you can change directories, allowing you change the current working directory to another directory.

Try searching on the Web: I'm sure that you can find tutorials about using the Windows command prompt, which will explain the basic commands such as 'cd', 'dir' and others.
