Does anyone know if Oracle will permit someone with an SCJP 6 take the OCPJP 8 Upgrade exam without first taking the OCPJP 7 Upgrade exam? Thanks.

Yes oracle does allow that.. 1Z0-813 Exam is exactly that, it says upgrade to Java SE 8 from SCJP 6 or prior.
All the best

That's the raison d'être of the 1Z0-813 Upgrade to Java SE 8 OCP ( Java SE 6 and all prior versions) certification exam.

Do we have to provide a proof that we are indeed certified in a previous version to take the 1Z0-813 exam?

Not to take the exam. But to get certified afterwards, yes. So essentially, yes.

Thank you Jeanne. Luckily I still have the printed certificate and the card given by Sun.

It is sorta covered in the JavaRanch Style Guide.
