I saw Kent Beck wish JUnit a happy twentieth today. Which means the speculation in this thread ten years ago was good - JUnit was in fact created in October 1998.

So happy birthday JUnit. You aren't yet old enough for a beer here in the US, but I think I'll buy you one anyway:

java.lang.AssertionError:
Expected is: <1998>
but: was <1997>

Looks like an off by one error.

Also, JUnit was written by Kent and Erich Gamma on a flight from Zurich to Atlanta GA, on their way to OOPSLA. OOPSLA 1998 was in Vancouver, BC. OOPSLA 1997, however, was in Atlanta, GA.
Anyway, belated happy 20th  birthday, JUnit!

If you still have any doubts, you can listen to Kent give the history of how JUnit started here: http://www.se-radio.net/2010/09/episode-167-the-history-of-junit-and-the-future-of-testing-with-kent-beck/

He mentions Zurich, OOPSLA, Erich Gamma, Atlanta, and Martin Fowler, who was the first one to kick the tires on JUnit 1 and take it for a spin. The rest, as they say, is history.
