Ideas for To-do management

Sometimes, when I am at home doing something, I realize I need to buy something else to finish that thing. For example, if I am fixing a wall socket, I realize I don't have a particular screw. Until I go buy that screw, I have to leave that task unfinished. Obviously, it is not always possible to go out and get it immediately so I wrap it up and decide to attend to it later.  On another day, there could be some other task that is left unfinished for the want of an entirely different thing or reason.

The problem is when I am at a hardware store by chance (i.e. not visiting a hardware store on purpose to buy all the things that are causing the jobs to remain unfinished), I don't remember most of things I actually need to buy.  Similarly, if I am passing through an area by where a particular shop is located, I don't remember to buy or do stuff that is holding up some activity at home. Then, when I get home, I realize, damn, I was there just now and still didn't do/get it.

Does it happen to you? If yes, any ideas to make your trips to places more productive?

Ideally, I would like my phone to alert me of such things.

I use the GroceryIQ app on my iPhone to maintain shopping lists (including the grocery list).

I also make copious use of the Calendar and Reminders apps.

But who reminds you to get groceries while passing through an area that has a grocery store? and may be collect laundry at the same time.

For that you would need something which knows that there is a grocery store nearby, wouldn't you?

The iOS Reminders app can remind you when you near a location, not just at a specific date and time. For example "remind me when when I near Home Depot that I need screws" or "remind me when I near HEB (grocery) that I need puff pastry".

For those using Android, I'd think that an app with similar capabilities would be available.

Obviously, and that you do need buy groceries.

Ideally, I should be able to tell my phone, "remind me to get screws" or "withdraw cash from atm" and then if anytime in the future I am near any h/w store/atm, it should remind me to get the screws/withdraw cash.

Ummm, yeah. As I've already posted. (Although you need a specific location, not "any" location.)

The last time I went anywhere near such a shop, I had the opposite problem. They didn't have anything like what I was looking for, so I ended up going 50 miles out of my way and not buying anything.

Like when I went to the grocery store the other day with a 2-item list and walked out with 5 bags of stuff?

Granted, it wasn't useless crap, but yeah, I always get more than intended.

The people who teach financil management say never to go food shopping when hungry. There is a risk of buying more than intended and overspending.
