I took my SCJP 1.5 certification exam in 2008.   I am a Java developer for almost 7 years now.

Havind decided to update myself to Java 8, I have set the goal to finish OCP java 8 before summer.

The Certification Kit : Exam 1Z0-808 and Exam 1Z0-809 (jeanne boyarsky and scott selikoff) has
been ordered.

While reading the first chapter of OCA, I felt it so boring because I had to read the very basic things
along with the few new things added in java since 1.5.

I just wanted to know if I can Skip the OCA book and start with OCP.  If I do so, can I pass both OCA
and OCP ?

Welcome to CodeRanch Uma Shankar Subramani.

There is an upgrade exam to go from Java 6 to OCP Java 8 (exam 1Z0-813), but I'm not too sure if there is one to go from Java 5 to OCP Java 8.
Here is a good place to start your research for this https://education.oracle.com/pls/web_prod-plq-dad/db_pages.getpage?page_id=5001&get_params=p_exam_id:1Z0-813
And here for some help https://docs.oracle.com/javase/tutorial/extra/certification/javase-8-upgrade.html.
They do say

Upgrade to Java SE 8 OCP (Java SE 6 and all prior versions)

It's my understanding that you may be able to take the OCP Java 8 exam and pass, but before you are given your Java 8 OCP certification you need to take and pass the OCA Java 8 exam.

Hope this helps you out.

I think the question is whether you can pass both OCA and OCP exams after just studying the OCP books. I would say that is something only you yourself can answer. Having reviewed the Certificate Objectives for the OCA do you think that there is nothing in the OCA prep literature that you don't already know?

In general I'd say if you're going for an exam, then it is wise to study the material covered in that exam. If you already know a lot / all of the material then your study time before you feel comfortable enough to take the exam will be shorter.

Nobody but yourself can advise on whether you are suitably prepared for any exam.

If this is correct then one of my first posts from about five months ago may help out with this

It is. As per Oracle's official 1Z0-813 page:

Exam Title: Upgrade to Java SE 8 OCP ( Java SE 6 and all prior versions)

But to answer the original question, you can read up on the topics covered in this upgrade exam and then take a couple mock exams that are specific to this exam. That should help you avoid spending time on the boring stuff that you already know about
