I like that the new OCP Java SE 8 Programmer II Exam Guide is described as written very conversational style and is not short on explanations of the exam topics. But I have actually already been using another 1Z0-809 exam prep book for several weeks. And I was wondering if this new book might be able to be used in conjunction with other exam prep books for the same exam. For example, would it be possible to only jump in and read specific chapters of areas I am most weak on or does the new book flow where you really need to read it from start to finish? Also would it be possible to use this new book for the additional exercises and self-test questions without reading everything cover to cover? Maybe this seems like overkill, but I find for myself there is a lot of material covered on the exam and even though I understand the material for the most part pretty well I still have trouble answering the simulated practice exam questions fast enough so I am considering possibly using this book for additional practice. Thanks.
Have you looked at its table of contents or anything? I think you will find more on the “look inside” feature on a well‑known book website than on the publisher's website. I think yes, you can use this book in conjunction with other resources. You can read the book from cover to cover or read a single page which you think will help. It depends on whether you have the money for it, or whether you are lucky in this promotion.
Yes I think it would work fine for you to use the book with other resources; you certainly can open to a specific chapter or even specific section and probably be fine picking up at that point, although you may find that we rely on previous examples or code developed to a certain point in a section. As Campbell suggests, take a look at the table of contents and that should give you an idea of how we break up the topics. We use the exam objectives to guide the content structure to some degree although there is some mixing of content from different objectives sections in say, one chapter, where it makes sense.
Thank you both for the replies. Yes I took a look at the "Look Inside" feature for this book and I think it will be helpful. I have already gone over the study material for the OCP objectives and I think I am at the phase where I really need to do more practice with coding samples and practice exercises and quizzes. I am thinking this additional book might be worth it just for that reason. Thanks.

The amount of information varies by the individual exam objectives, so a book following the objectives strictly would have unbalanced chapters of very varied sizes.
