A good book (like Head First Java) certainly helps, and the Oracle Java Tutorials are very extensive.

Basic grammar -> the most simple example for every tasks;
if(basic grammar == true) {
    write simple application ->  (no matter what);
    learn -> runTime();  //what you want(read about this)
    use git -> your collection of programs that you can share;
}

RWS -> read, write, share;
