Hello,

I'd appreciate very much if someone can tell me as I'm confused to which exam I should take/upgrade. I got my Sun Java Programmer Certificate in 06/2004. Can you tell me which exam version for me to take, 1Z0-809, 1Z0-810 or 1Z0-813?  Is it an upgrade and what's the difference for upgrading or not?

Thanks,
Ngan

Welcome to the Ranch

Why do you think you need to sit an upgrade at all? If you have been working continuously since 2004, why would you need an upgrade?

Thank you. I actually took a leave in Feb 2017 doing something else, now coming back.

I just accepted an offer, starting Sept 1st. The organization requires every developer there to take the certificate within the first 6 months. I also need to do some review myself. Do I have an option to either take the 1Z0-809 or 1Z0-813?

What are those three exams? I only know what 1Z0-809 is. Which do you think will be most relevant to your current work? Have your employers given you any guidance about which exam to sit?

If you want to take the 809 then you must also take the 808 exam. While you may be able to take the 809 before you take the 808 they will not send you the certifications until you complete both.
This path means that you will have to take two exams.

On the other hand the 813 exam is only one exam and at the end you will be at the same place as those who have taken both the 808 and 809 exams.

All that said, make sure that up get a study guide which covers the 813 exam if you are taking that path.
There have been things added to Java 8 such as the Calendar class, default methods, Lambdas, and concurrency improvements which should be covered in 813 study guides.
Or you may be able to get away with getting using an two study guides, and 808 guide and an 809 guide. But this is not recommended.

You should also take a look at the Enthuware question banks which many people have used successfully to prepare for their Java certifications.

What did your prospective employer say? If you aren't certain, phone and ask; they may have a specific exam they want you to sit.

Don't get me started about those stupid light bulbs.
