HOWEVER if I execute this method ( modified one ). I get no errors, and query is successful.

Bob,
execute() is defined on Statement and used when there are no parameters. executeUpdate() and executeQuery() are defined on PreparedStatement and support parameters. Since PreparedStatement extends Statement, both are available to you which creates the confusing scenario you just encountered!

You want to call executeUpdate() in your code. That tells JDBC that you want to run a statement that changes the database with parameters.
