hi all,

I have taken SCJP and OCWCD in the past, a while ago. should I be doing the Java 8 upgrade or the regular OCJP for Java 8?

is there a Kathy Sierra book for Java 8, or which book is recommended? please help me. thanks.

If you have already passed SCJP 6 (or an even earlier version), you can straightaway go for the upgrade exam with code 1Z0-813. (Code is important, because there is a different upgrade exam with code 1Z0-810 if you have passed OCJPJP 7).
Here are the details: https://education.oracle.com/upgrade-java-se-6-to-java-se-8-ocp-programmer/pexam_1Z0-813

You are in luck because the 813 exam is substantially easier than the 810 exam and even the full 809 exam. So, take it while it lasts

There are several books for OCPJP 8 but none specifically for the upgrade exam. You will need to take a look at the official exam objectives and read about them from any of these books.

Thanks for the prompt response. In upgrade certification, will most questions focus on the java 8 concepts ?

No, the book by Horstmann you quoted isn't suitable for beginners, nor is Java in a Nutshell. I don't think I would recommend any book that doesn't introduce objects from page 1, and many people have misgivings about the Deitel Java® books. I don't think Bruce Eckel's is a beginner's book, either. I have seen a part of the 4th edition, which I wasn't that impressed with.
The book by Bloch and Gafter isn't an advanced book; people much less experienced should read it.
Effective Java™ by Bloch is an excellent book, but I have a copy of the 3rd edition.
Why didn't you include books like Urma Fusco and Mycroft?

Our (Sybex) OCP book has an appendix covering the additional upgrade exam topics.
