Regular users can only attach images to posts. Moderators are in a position to attach other types of documents, if they are convinced of the value of doing so.

I have lots of places to store documents; abbreviations can cause confusion.

What would be the advantage of storing them on the Ranch (vs google drive/dropbox/etc)?

I thought about "stability" regard "stable things". I mean web links/pages are mostly dynamic so if you find something(stable(=not change or change rarely) content ) or not(in a later time) is mainly a function of time. So if someone has that thing "in house" there is not more a problem finding it trough a more o less long timeline; the stable things can be lightweight  open documents related to our field  e.g. .pdf, .chm, odt, .text etc; if web were less dynamic under that aspect  we would not have an advantage at all

I haven't heard about this term "lightweight open documents". I also don't understand how ".pdf", ".chm", etc.. fall under this category.

But.. coderanch is a forum and it does best at that. A forum allows contributors to discuss content. Many forums allow file attachments but that is not their primary goal.
A negative issue about files is that many files are not easily opened across all devices. try opening a .chm on your phone

NP  if you haven't; for everyone of us ever there's  a first time to hear something new the semantics  is trivial i guess
1. lightweight mean few MBs to up/down/load
2. open documents mean OER's(Open Education Resources)

I also don't understand how ".pdf", ".chm", etc.. fall under this category

Mmmh i never heard music or saw a movie under those formats there are also others like .mobi .epub etc

But.. coderanch is a forum and it does best at that. A forum allows contributors to discuss content. Many forums allow file attachments but that is not their primary goal.

.
We agree on that but  of the two types of forums i guess the second one(that allow file attachments ) would be more practical in the case the content to discuss is no more or difficult to find elsewhere(and in that case there are no content to discuss isn't ?) a;though the DB's space would be a bit more costly

Doh! i not consider that use case and sorry about that but i use the cell phone(not smart yeah I know I'm old school) only to traditional voice calls though my view is not so sharp as was when younger and iwonder how someone can read an ebook in a so small screen. But if already exist a pdf reader for them i guess there where not a problem to do a .chm reader app or also for other ebook type files
I ever meant a computer(desktop, laptop etc) or ebook reader(tablet) thing

PS: FYI like the opensource movement out there exist also another one in the same vein called Open Knowledge (or also) in which trough others Hewlett foundation is a Great contributor(Hewlett has been funding plenty of good work.)
