Hello everyone! I am new to Java and programming. I am taking a course in college right now. Going for a degree in Web Design and Development. I have been googling questions at times and I've found some good tips here in posts. Seems like a good place to learn and share. I must say this class has been tough. I have smoke coming out my ears trying to understand and implement all the material we have covered. I didn't think it would be easy but wow, this is one of the hardest things I have ever taken on academically. I'll keep plugging away at it, nothing good usually comes easily. Anyway, happy to be here and thanks to all that support and run this forum.

Welcome again

You are right that things worthwhile aren't easy. We have fora about different languages, and you will probably find somewhere suitable for discussing web design. I am adding this discussion to our introductions forum.

Change your perspective.
Analogous to programming language, you would feel the same way if you were suddenly introduced to a crowd speaking spanish or french or any other language that you don't know. Everything would seem strange at first, but once you start understanding and learning the language, things start getting better and easier. Similarly, a programming language is communicated with a computer (or a device) that only understands maths The language constructs are hence strict and unforgiving to small mistakes and typos.

Thanks for the welcome! And Salvin I totally agree with you. More comfort will come in time and practice, lots of practice. I have a long, long way to go. I get kind of discouraged at times but then I read others account's of feeling the same way, so that helps.

"Drinking from a firehose" is a common cliche for how you're feeling at the moment.

That's exactly the feeling. Thanks for chiming in! So everyone, where would I pose a coding question. What thread/topic area? I'm so new to this forum. Thanks!

Well, if you're learning Java, probably one of the topics in there.

My suggestion: Once you've signed in, go to the Forums page and have a quick browse around.
Then click on the 'JAVA' link in bold, a little way down on the right hand side. That will take you here, which contains just Java forums.

To start with, you're probably best off posting in 'Beginning Java' until you get used to how to ask questions (which isn't as easy at it might seem).
Once you get more experienced, and used to the tags and controls, you can move on to 'Java in General', and then onto specific topic pages, which are always listed on the right hand side.

And BTW, this is an oft-quoted page for anyone who thinks programming is easy. :-)

Hope it helps. And welcome to JavaRanch!

Thanks Winston, I appreciate it. This helps a lot. I'm working on my first program which is a major milestone for the class I'm in and I have code together that's working but I have a bug I can't figure out. Long explanation. I'll look around these areas and see what I can find.

Be reasonable. You can't destroy everything. Where would you sit? How would you read a tiny ad?
