Phil Katz has died. You can see an article at http://abcnews.go.com/sections/tech/DailyNews/pkzip000422.html
This is the guy that gave us ZIP. Before that, he created pkarc which was a superior compression program to the existing arc. A legal battle over the file extension .arc made Phil give all of his source code to the company that claimed to own the file extension.
Phil died at the age of 37. One of the worlds greatest contributors to computer science.
