They were supposed to have been measured for my size, but there was so much excess space in them I could almost have squeezed somebody else in there. The last time they were hired, somebody obviously had the opposite problem and cut the waistband at the back with a dirrty great pair of scissors. After 10″ I had those trousers round my knees. At least it wasn't whilst in public view.

I don't think I'll ask you for pictures to prove it.

Don't worry. People tend to get heavier when growing old. So, just have patience.

You wouldn't get photos anyway. But I do have witnesses. These trousers are hired for one week while I am performing, so my chances of gaining 6″ (=150mm) around the waist in a week are very slight.  We have been rehearsing since May.

We had our last non‑theatre rehearsal tonight. It is hard work running around and singing for nearly 2½ hours. Not that I am on stage all that time.
The Gondoliers by Gilbert and Sullivan. Somebody suggested some time ago I join the local G&S Society, and I did, back in January. There seemed to be several people there who already knew me; when I went along for my first rehearsal, somebody got my name wrong, and I could shout, “What am I called?” and get, “Campbell,” from about four people in different parts of the room.

Oh wauw, respect! I can't even start to imagine how energy-consuming that must be... How is your voice the day after?

As I said, I am not singing for all those 2½ hours; those with large rôles have much more singing. My voice has to be in good working order the next day. For the next performance. Until next Friday.

Ah, language nostalgia. I haven't seen "role" spelled with the hat in æons.

Language nostalgia isn't what it used to be.
It went well; we all had a good time and enjoyed the show
