Well, what is sum[i]?  Is it an array or an int?

There's also a problem on line 9.  Is sum an array or an array of arrays?

It is supposed to be an array of arrays. 2D arrays are turning out to be a pain. Next is searching and sorting.

I think you meant:
Since matrix is an array of arrays, It's sum should be an array of arrays too. Java does not have 2D arrays as you expect, rather, they are arrays of arrays.
