You can tell when new use cases sprung up by the explosive growth of particular languages, like the meteoric rise of Java and JavaScript in the late '90's thanks to the growth of the Internet.  Same with Objective C and Swift in 2010 thanks to mobile development.
I'm surprised to see C# isn't more popular.  I'm looking for a job and it seems that there's more C# than Java jobs out there (at least in my market. YMMV).  Python is no surprise.  Even people I know who aren't programmers know some Python!

The rapid rise of Pascal in the late Seventies was probably due in large part to the success of the Apple ][, which was one of the few widely used machines at the time who supported it.
