Justyn,
How do you know it isn't decrementing? Is the variable used somewhere else? Or output somewhere?

Hi Jeanne,

I've included a link to a video recording I just made that will hopefully answer
your question and shed a little more light on the problem I'm experiencing.
Thank you again in advance for your help.

I made a simple Plunker with your code and the attempts does in-fact decrement with each failed attempt.  Are you reloading the page after each attempt?
