You're using an old version of Java in combination with a new version of Maven. Upgrade Java.

What version are you using? And have you changed the Java version in your POM as well?

How are you building your application? If you're using an IDE, you might still need to configure your project to use the proper JDK.

I've read that as of 1/15 Maven central repo no longer accepts unencrypted http traffic, but I'm not sure how to fix that.

By upgrading Java.

@Martin, if you run "mvn -v" from a command prompt, what does it print?

Sonatype did not do a good job communicating that. It may be as easy as editing the repo URL in ~/.m2/settings.xml; that did it for me.

Martin, does it display any errors when you build using "mvn package"?

What IDE are you using to build normally?

Get to a command line (the console).  cd into the directory (folder) that has the pom.xml file in it.  Then type

   mvn package

It looks like you downloaded JGit manually instead of using an online repository. Get rid of the download and configure your project to use the Eclipse Releases Repository:

Looks to me like your POM is ill-formed. Please post it in its entirety.

Looks decent, although you don't need the Eclipse repo if you're not going to use any dependencies/plugins from it.

It looks like Eclipse has a really rough time passing custom system properties to Maven, so you need to run this once from the command line:

After that, your project should build fine under Eclipse.

What version of Eclipse are you using?

I think your best bet is to zip your entire project and host it somewhere for us to take a look at.

You're using an IDE from 2013?

Maybe it's time for an upgrade.

It looks like Eclipse has a really rough time passing custom system properties to Maven,.

It shouldn't. Never did for me, in fact. Eclipse runs Maven the same way it runs any other Java application and the "Run/Debug" profiles are used in the same way, so they can take both application and JVM parameters.

However, I think that anything from 2013 is likely to have major issues contacting the Internet. If you access the Maven repo with an "http://" url, I think it will probably immediately re-direct to the https:// URL, so they're not a problem. But the insecure SSL protocols are no longer supported and that can cause problems when old JVMs issue web requests and try to use them.

So it's time to upgrade the JDK, upgrade Maven and upgrade Eclipse.
