How to get first Java developer role

I’ve been a developer for several years, the last few years as an ETL developer, so my core skills I guess are Informatica / Oracle / SQL Server.

The trouble is, I feel there are very few jobs these days looking for these skills whereas Java seems to always be in high demand.

I spent the first couple of months studying for 1Z0-808, the OCA Java SE Programmer I, which I passed 2 weeks ago with 76%.

Now I’m looking at the jobs market and all of the Java roles I see are looking for 3 years Java experience.

Any tips for getting a Java role? I’d like to do the 1Z0-809 Programmmer II at some point but it only seems worth doing if I am actually working as a Java developer.

Appreciate any advice

Thanks

Hello Ian Usher

I’d like to do the 1Z0-809 Programmmer II at some point but it only seems worth doing if I am actually working as a Java developer.

Not necessarily. For the best chance to get the position, do second exam.
First exam is really just about Java Basics, but second show your deep understanding of Java.

Isn’t the 1Z0-809 aimed at people who are already working with Java? I read somewhere it’s considered to be an intermediate level exam for people already experienced in Java?

I also read it’s likely to be much harder to pass if you aren’t working with Java every day...it’s not really intended to just be studied on its own?
