I did 1Z0-808 at the beginning of 2020, I was aware that the v11 exams were now live but it seemed like at the time the study guides and practice exams for v11 weren’t as widely available as for v8 so I went for v8. I’m a newcomer to Java and not actually even working as a Java developer, so I felt the more help I could get the better.

I would like to do 1Z0-809 at some point....but I don’t know when I’m going to be able to do it...I feel it is probably better to try and land a Java role first and then start studying. But I’m worried that by the time I get there, the v8 exams will have been retired and I’ll have to start all over again with v11.

Is it still possible to do the v7 exams? (I assume not). If it’s not, when did they get retired? That might give an indication as to when v8 are likely to be retired.

I know the upgrade to v8 got retired at end of Feb 2020.

Thanks

The Java 8 (809) exam is still active.

This 2018 retirements thread shows the Java 6 exam got retired in May 2018 and the Java 7 one in December 2018. I think Oracle collected exams to retire there.

Note that you the 816 exam (the second half of the Java 11 cert) has a choice of pre-req. One of the choice sis the 808 exam that you hold. So even if the 809 exam doesn't exist when you want to take it, you won't have to start over.
