Why do you need to sit another exam at all? Do you requie it to look for a new job? Has anybody at your employer's told you to sit an exam?

Look through the Oracle website; you might do one of the Java8 exams or Java11 programmer part I.

I think what Campbell is saying that while the exam is retired, your cert itself doesn't expire. You will be Java 7 certified forever. There are valid reasons to upgrade like wanting to get an OCP, updating your resume or learning new skills.

Ye,s you should take the 816. The OCA 7 is a valid pre-req for it.

Yes it was, but you put it a lot better

There are good reasons for sitting a new exam, e.g.
  • Current employer says I ought to try the new exam
  • Many job adverts require OCP8/OCP11
  • It will reassure me of my competence with Java8/11.
  • There are also, unfortunately bad reasons.
  • Somebody said I would appear out of date without OCP8, even if I have been writing λs and Streams every day for the last five years.
  • Somebody said my Java7 qualification was obsolete.
  • As Jeanne says, even if Java7 is considered legacy code, the qualification remains valid for ever.
