If QA team is automating  thousands of Regression test cases, is it possible to apply here agile method?
This is kind of automating thousands of regression test cases when QA team finds free cycles in-between the major releases?

This is kind of a head-scratcher. QA is just part of the development process and trying to optimize only that is local optimization at best and not likely to benefit the organization as a whole very much.
