What is the advantage of having a kafka layer between actual source and Spark streaming ?

When Spark processes streaming data, it is typically used Kafka ingesting the data and Spark streaming consuming from it. But does this not add an additional layer between the source and Spark. What is the advantage of having a kafka layer between actual source and Spark streaming ?
