Are Spark SQL and Hive used together only in case of existing Hive or for new requirements too?

Spark SQL is compatible with Hive. Are Hive and Spark SQL used together only for existing Hive applications and for new requirements one would not use Hive at all and instead use Spark SQL which is several times faster?
