Hi everyone,

I had been preparing for the 815 exam for the last few weeks. I was planning to take the exam in Feb and then take another few months to prepare for the 816 exam. But now that both the exams have been replaced with the single 819 exam, I don't think I have enough preparation to take the exam in Feb. Especially because the 819 is much harder and seems to require a lot of practice on advanced concepts. Should I instead take the 808 exam in Feb and maybe the 809 in March instead? Or should I take maybe 3-4 months to prepare for 819? Will Java 8 certifications still be considered valid today, given that 11 is now the LTS version?

Many thanks!

It's going to take more than a month to study for the 809. The 809 is the same level of difficulty as the 819.

Java certs don't expire. Depending on your employer, a more recent version may or may not be more desirable.

Things to consider in your choice:
  • Does it benefit you to have a cert sooner? If so, take the 808
  • Are you ok with paying for two exams?
  • Will it bother you if you  have to take the 819 after the 808? (At some point, the 808/809 will be retired. Oracle hasn't announced anything. But my guess is it will be sometime this year)
  • Will it bother you to buy new study material? It's really important to have study material for the version of the exam you are taking.
  • How fast do you take tests? (The 819 requires you to get thru the questions faster)

I would add, “What did your employer say?” or, “What are potential employers saying?”
