Do you want to write software for the UK’s latest frontline fighter Augmented/Virtual Reality trainers for nuclear submarines or Typhoon and Hawk jets? Are you interested in integrating software into high fidelity cockpit or tank training systems, or developing Air Traffic Control simulations that allow student controllers to “talk down” jets and train for emergency situations? We currently have a vacancy for a Senior Software Engineer at our site in Hillend.

As a Senior software engineer, you will generate software for high fidelity crew/operator compartments where high levels of training immersion are required, applying them in the fields of aircraft and submarine maintenance training.

This role will provide you with the opportunity to work closely with team members and support the team and/or project leadership in daily activities. You may also be asked to lead teams of up to 10 engineers. You may also be required for help diagnose problems and solve internally and customer reported issues.

Your main responsibilities as a Senior Software Engineer will involve:

Ownership of requirements, design and implementation, and test to a high standard, within schedule and estimates

Generation and management of requirements

Design of technical solutions

Software development of those solutions

Testing involved in verifying the above

Adherence to project processes and software development practices

Accurately reporting on progress and providing feedback to team members and leadership Supporting

System Test and Integration Activities

Production of technical documentation

Estimation of development activities

You may also be asked to lead teams of up to 10 engineers

Your skills and qualifications:

Essential:

Experience of working to defined and structured engineering lifecycle processes with formal gate reviews and a culture of measurement and continuous improvement

Good understanding and experience of the full software development lifecycle, from requirements & design through to delivery

Desktop-based applications in C#/C++ or Java

Windows O/S

Desirable:

Simulation modelling techniques or Graphics technologies (e.g. Unity) would be advantageous

An honours degree or equivalent professional qualification in a relevant STEM subject, although relevant knowledge and experience may offset the qualification requirements

What we're looking for in you:

You will have a 'can do' attitude with the ability to deliver within agreed budgets and timescales. You will have self-organisation and good time management, with the ability to work well within a team and under your own initiative. You will be innovative and able to drive improvement within your own work and throughout the delivery of the work package.

Location: Hillend

Salary: £44,840 + dependent on skills and experience

Benefits: Our employees receive an excellent benefits package which includes a competitive pension scheme, enhanced annual leave allowance and a Company contributed Share Incentive Plan. We also offer a range of additional benefits such as flexible working, an employee assistance programme, Cycle2work and many local and national employee discounts. Some employees may also be eligible for an annual incentive.

Where is Hillend? I looked it up on the map and got several hits, in North Derbyshire, Lanarkshire, Fife, etc.

Hillend is just north of Edinburgh, over the river seven on the fourth bridge, and head east towards Dalgety Bay.  A nice part of the world, you just have to avoid the odd drunken sailor as it's way too close to the Rosyth naval base!

The odd thing is I once interviewed for a contract at this site.  The interview quite quickly became very informal, but ultimately I was unsuccessful.  Turns out for that particular role they were really after a "real-time" C programmer who understood avionics and also held the required clearances.  For the bit of java, they did, I recall they using the eclipse modeling framework.

The rate for the role was a lot more than £45K, somewhere between £350-£450 a day if I remember correctly.  That was of course before all of this IR-35 nonsense.

defined and structured engineering lifecycle processes with formal gate reviews and a culture of measurement

- so a good old waterfall project then!

Thank you. Dalgety Bay definitely means Fife.
