As a Principal Engineer - Systems Engineering (Architecture) you will have the opportunity to work on one of a variety of our programmes, helping us to design, develop, integrate, manage and support systems for in-service/future submarines. You will have a good understanding of the inputs, flow of decisions and dependencies that will impact system design as well as product delivery.
This role sits at the centre of our major drive towards embedding the Model Based approached systems engineering within Submarines. You will continue to develop a wide range of skills and experience across all areas and disciplines and we are able to offer real opportunities for personal and team development to ensure that the professional capability of the business and individual are maintained and improved.
Your main responsibilities as a Principal Engineer - Systems Engineering (Architecture) will involve:
Understanding our customers’ challenging needs and acting as a subject matter expert; analysing, preparing and communicating these through the use of architectural methodologies
Developing complex system architectures and sub-systems and providing evidence of fitness for purpose
Supporting the development of our Architecture capability through workshops, direct support to other Engineering teams and is part of a growing community of System Engineers
Taking accountability for technical work packages
Providing leadership, guidance and coaching to other engineers
Steering new systems development through implementation of best practice systems lifecycle processes
Working with customers to support delivered systems and resolve issues
Essential:
Degree level qualification (or equivalent experience) in relevant STEM subject (Engineering/ Physics/ Maths/ Science)
Significant experience in System Architecture definition and development (MoDAF, TOSAF, SOSAF etc)
Experience undertaking Systems Engineering activities. This should include some combination of:
- Requirements Engineering and Management
- Model Based Systems Engineering (UML, SysML etc)
- Systems Integration, Verification and Validation
- Implementing and Governing Engineering Lifecycles
- Defining and managing System interfaces
Understanding of relevant engineering standards, including safety and environmental regulations
Desirable:
Practical experience with DOORs, Enterprise Architect or similar requirements management and Systems Modelling toolsets.

- IP Networking and Data Communications
- Control systems i.e. PLCs
- Avionics Development
- Safety Engineering
- 3rd party contract management
- Configuration Management (policy and implementation)
- Qualification Certification and Acceptance
- Submarine Platform Knowledge including operational experience
