hi,
the code below produces -1 as a result. i would like to understand why and the java concept that is highlighted. i was expecting "999" as a result.

You probably think that line n8 refers to Base.id. It doesn't. It refers to Derived.id, which still has the default value of 0 when it is being decremented.

If you remove line n5, the code would print 999.
