I was driving home the other day and the licence plate on the car in front of me made me start laughing.

Background: The standard licence plates where I live are like "Letter, letter, number - number, number, letter". But you don't have to get the standard plate, you can get a personalized plate with anything you like on it. Anything you like within reason, that is. Like it can't be more than 6 letters or numbers, and it must be "appropriate". It's checked for that before you get it.

However the standard plates aren't checked for appropriateness, which is why you can drive around with a licence plate which says "SH1-11T".

Actually, plate IDs are vetted for appropriateness in many states. But some inevitably leak through.

A funny one I heard of the other day, though was "BB8B88B" or something of that order. Almost certainly intended to frustrate officers trying to radio in a plate check.

Always try to have a smaller plate on the motorbike, but not too small as to get the attention of the police.

The DVLA (or UK government) makes a small fortune on selling private number plates, it looks like "F1" is for sale for a cool £10,000,000
