I've just installed RAD6 (it is new to me) and I am trying to get my server to start. I have not assigned any EAR to it yet; I simply am trying to get it started. RAD6 shows that it is in a "starting" state, but never completes. Nothing is displayed in the RAD6 console either.

If I run "startServer" from a command window it says that the server has launched but failed to initialize.

Here is the output from the command window:

C:\RAD6\runtimes\base_v6\profiles\default\bin>startServer server1 -trace
ADMU0115I: Trace mode is on.
ADMU0116I: Tool information is being logged in file
C:\RAD6\runtimes\base_v6\profiles\default\logs\server1\startServer.log
ADMU0128I: Starting tool with the default profile
ADMU3100I: Reading configuration for server: server1
ADMU3200I: Server launched. Waiting for initialization status.
ADMU3011E: Server launched but failed initialization. startServer.log,
SystemOut.log(or job log in zOS) and other log files under
C:\RAD6\runtimes\base_v6/profiles/default\logs\server1 should
contain failure information.

C:\RAD6\runtimes\base_v6\profiles\default\bin>
C:\RAD6\runtimes\base_v6\profiles\default\bin>stopServer server1 -trace
ADMU0115I: Trace mode is on.
ADMU0116I: Tool information is being logged in file
C:\RAD6\runtimes\base_v6\profiles\default\logs\server1\stopServer.log
ADMU0128I: Starting tool with the default profile
ADMU3100I: Reading configuration for server: server1
ADMU0509I: The server "server1" cannot be reached. It appears to be stopped.
ADMU0211I: Error details may be seen in the file:
C:\RAD6\runtimes\base_v6/profiles/default\logs\server1\stopServer.log

When I look in the Admin Console, the server is displayed as if it is running.

I've included the SystemOut.log and startServer.log below. The end of the SystemOut log says that the server is open for e-business(?).

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Thanks in advance.

Here is the SystemOut.log:

My apologies for not using my name as the displayed name. I didn't know there was a rule here about that. Wiley243 is a common userid for me, but I've changed it to my name.

Thanks for following up, Shane. And I do hope you get an answer to your question because I am wrestling with the identical problem here. If I come up with anything useful I will let you know.

Well, my problem seems to have mysteriously gone away. Although I took this message to be the key thing:

Conflict detected on port 8880. Likely causes: a) An instance of the server server1 is already running b) some other process is using port 8880

This is what I did:

1. Install many fixpacks. (I'm up to 6.0.2.7, you're up to 6.0.2.5 which should be okay I suppose.)

2. Make sure there's nothing listening on port 8880.

3. Make sure RAD isn't set up as a service to start automatically.

4. Restart the system.

5. Make sure there's nothing listening on port 8880.

6. Start the server -- it worked.

Thanks for your help Paul.

I've checked my services to see if RAD is a started service. I don't see RAD specifically, but I do see "IBM Rational Agent Controller" is started. Is this okay? I stopped it and tried to start my server, but it had no effect.

I want to update to 6.0.2.7, but am not able to find it when searching for updates using IBM Rational Product Updater within RAD6. Did I need to upgrade some other way?

I think the way to see what is listening on a specific port is to use IE and type in http://localhost:8880 (or whatever port I'm checking). Is this correct? This is what I got for port 8880:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" ?>
- <SOAP-ENV:Envelope xmlns:SOAP-ENV="http://schemas.xmlsoap.org/soap/envelope/" xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" xmlns:xsd="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema">
<SOAP-ENV:Header xmlns:ns0="admin" ns0:WASRemoteRuntimeVersion="6.0.2.5" ns0:JMXMessageVersion="1.0.0" ns0:JMXVersion="1.2.0" />
- <SOAP-ENV:Body>
- <SOAP-ENV:Fault>
<faultcode>SOAP-ENV:Server</faultcode>
<faultstring>...a long Base64-encoded string...</faultstring>
<faultactor>/</faultactor>
</SOAP-ENV:Fault>
</SOAP-ENV:Body>
</SOAP-ENV:Envelope>

Ideas?

Thanks again,
Shane

I wouldn't worry about upgrading.

That's one way to find out whether something is listening at a port.
The other way is at the command line: telnet localhost 8880

In your case, something IS listening at that port. Probably the RAD
server, but whatever, you need to find out how it gets started.

When I started my laptop this morning, I verified that nothing was listening on 8880 by the telnet command and the localhost URL from IE. Then I tried "startServer" again from a new cmd window. I received the same error as yesterday. Then I went back to the other cmd window and re-ran the telnet command you provided. NOW there is something listening on 8880. The IE localhost command also confirmed.

Seems to me that RAD6 and WAS6 have some serious pain-in-the-ass issues!

I spend about 6 hours installing and configuring and applying patches today, migrating an old WSAD workspace and then setting up datasources within WAS6..

all was looking pretty good until I applied Global Security and attempted to deploy an application...

Now WAS doesnt start because of poor configuration, so I cant fire up the admin console, so I cant re-configure things, so WAS doesnt start... (Text-book implementation of the "Catch22" pattern)

Am I up for a full re-install and start again? If so hand me a gun - I'm ready to rampage through the nearest IBM office!!

I worked with IBM RAD6 and WAS6 support teams. They said it was impossible to have the situation the I "thought" I was having. They had me bundle up about 700 files and send them. They reviewed them and agreed that I was having the problem that I reported; though they didn't think it was possible.

I had installed a few versions of .NET and JRE because of the different apps I had supported in the past 2 years. It was finally agreed that I would start with a fresh laptop since we felt I was having "unusual" behavior.

Before I was to start with a new laptop, I took my laptop home and loaded one of my personal PC Utilities and did some major cleaning of the registry. That seemed to fix the problem, at least at first. I continued to have unusual behavior with some of our web apps (that only my laptop was experiencing). So finally, it was decided to start over.

I got a new hard drive and image. I then loaded RAD6/WAS6 with NO problems. Everything runs as it should now.

I suspect that the various installs/uninstalls of the .NET framework and JREs caused some problems that no one (including IBM) could figure out.

This is not all the unusual at my work site. Lots of people installing RAD6. Some have no problems, others it takes 10 installs to get it working correctly. Seems RAD6 was not really ready for release, but rather a BETA release.

Good luck all!

Shane

When I look in the Admin Console, the server is displayed as if it is running.

I've included the SystemOut.log and startServer.log below. The end of the SystemOut log says that the server is open for e-business(?).

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Thanks in advance.

I had the similar problem (initializing the server)

1) I disabled IBM WebSphere Application Server V6 Service in Administrative Tools>Services.
2) I cleared all the files in server logs folder.
3) Then, i restarted my system, and normally started the server (without adding any application to it).

And the server got started.

(Now change the WAS server service to previous status)

Step to resolve the "ADMU3011E" error.

Solution for windows-XP
Let WPS_HOME = C:\IBM\WebSphere

Step (1): Go to command prompt
Step (2): cd <WPS_HOME>\wp_profile\bin
Step (3): execute file "osgiCfgInit.bat" at command prompt

Now, start server using startServer.bat

Step (4): startServer.bat WebSphere_Portal -user wpsadmin -password wpsadmin

serverName : WebSphere_Portal
userName : wpsadmin
password : wpsadmin
