Many people enjoy stations like BBC Radio 1 for its diverse music selection and engaging hosts, or NPR for its informative programming. What do you look for in an online FM station?

Technically, Internet Radio isn't "FM", it's digital with "FM" sound quality. But I won't complain. Before Internet Radio, listening to far-off stations meant late-night AM radio skip or the notoriously noisy shortwave AM transmissions. Although I once followed a Jacksonville, FL FM station all the way to St. Petersburg.

I don't listen as much as I used to. I liked to put on a New Age channel while doing software development. Or more recently, Die Neue Welle out of Karlsruhe Germany. Their programming wasn't the same stale old Top 40 that gets satellite-splattered all over the USA, and included hits that were big in Europe but unheard in the US.

Also I got a kick out of commercials for opticians and bowling alleys and the like local to Karlsruhe.

I can remember the days broadcasters would anchor an old ship just outside the three‑mile limit and broadcast from there. It was frowned upon severely by the authorities, but the populace listened avidly.
