I'm delighted to see that this book is out!
How can individual contributors (those of us without the authority to make major decisions around hosting, data center provisioning, etc.) contribute to making our systems more green? What design and development practices can we apply to contribute to the goal?

Hi Joel!

I'm glad you're delighted!

For most enterprises, the first place to start is by reducing waste in your systems - right sizing, turning off systems that are no longer used. That can reduce bills and carbon emissions by 30-50%!

You could suggest that rather than a hackathon you run a green thriftathon, where folk look for stuff to rightsize!

Your hosting bill is not a perfect measure for your carbon emissions, but it isn't bad!

Cheers,
Anne
