So I've been watching people create these random new words, seemingly with no regard to the original rules of the thread: "change any letter of it, dont add any and it should still be a proper word." I understood that to mean change just one letter, leaving the others in place. I really can't tell what rules others here are using - are there any?

People don't seem to be following a rule that the letters in the new word must be in the same order as in the old word. Thus "rats" could be changed to "rate" if you did follow that rule, but it could be changed to "tear" if you didn't.

I think that rule was sort of implied by the original statement, but it's hard to say. In my opinion the game isn't very interesting if you can anagram all the time.

I thought the rule was implied too but then as long as you don't anagram, it can be fun too.

BUT....[where's the drum roll icon]
I propose a new thread for the likes of Jim and Paul . So, folks, here's Thread 3( where the order of letters don't change)
I hope the Ritika Saxena won't mind. (As a concession, the first word will be the one you suggested)

So, here goes,

Thread 1: Late -> BEAT
Thread 2: Loot -> BOOT
Thread 3( change one letter, order of letters remains same, must be still a valid word): LUCK (Sorry, David )

Well, about 3/4 of the posts here seem to have been obeying the original rules. Even the original poster seemed to obey them, up until near the end of the first page when rationality was abandoned for some reason. It looks like people abandon the original rules when they simply can't think of a solution that obeys those rules. (Which is sad, really, since in all cases I've seen, legal alternatives did exist.) And if anyone can explain foot -> toil, or silt -> tool, that would be a nice trick. I give up; this thread is even more meaningless than Word Association. Congratulations. :roll:

Hiya, Sheriff, Its not as bad as it looks. You admitted that 3/4 have been obeying the rules. So, there's still hope.
And look, threads 1 and 2 look like they are headed for a merger. So, hopefully , there will be lesser confusion.
So, Mr. Sheriff, Sir, give 'em old cowpokes another chance.

Whoa! there!! not so fast!!
...deep breath...and exhale...

OK, I guess you got a little wee bit carried away!
These two threads CANNOT be merged since they follow different rules:

Thread 1(change letter order allowed):
Thread 2(change letter order NOT allowed):

Therefore, GONE-> NOSE is invalid since it changes the letter order.
