What do you mean by how many joins? In Oracle there are inner joins and outer joins. In 9I they introduced the ANSI standard of full outer joins.
Does this answer your question in regards to Oracle? I don't know what is in SQL Server.

Its right as mark said, Its standarized as per ANSI.
broadly devided into two types
equi and non equi joins
self, inner and outer joins comes under equi join category
where as in non equi joins you ll be using an operator like '>' to join two tables.
